Two George III Carved Mahogany Side Chairs
Circa 1760-1780
each with damask upholstery.

Condition
both are sturdy and functional; both show evidence of formerly being armchairs, the overupholstered chair showing some filled holes along stiles, the chair with slip seat also showing filled holes along stiles as well as along both sides of seat frame; chair with overupholstered seat: with some small splits to splat, the shoe with some minor splits, showing evidence of having been reattached, and the splat with later shim underneath, the back seat rail probably replaced, showing signs of later pegs to underside for reinforcement, the back two support blocks are replaced, back stretcher with repaired break / split to right-facing side where it meets leg, the right side stretcher with repaired break where it meets center stretcher, all the stretcher / leg joints have been reinforced, the wood surfaces showing evidence of probably refinishing, and with some fading, particularly to back of crestrail and splat, the upholstery is later and shows overall fading and wear / fraying along edges commensurate with use; chair with slip seat: repaired break at right-facing corner of crestrail and to upper part of stile at joint, also re-pegged, splat with some minor age splits, retaining original corner blocks, the slip seat is later replacement, with some splits along edges, but still functional, with filled holes along seat frame and to stiles- possible evidence of having been formerly overupholstered, the wood with some honest wear commensurate with age and use, with some particularl surface loss to finish along right-facing and front seat frame, interior rail marked "III", the upholstery showing overall signs of wear and fading commensurate with use, minor knicks to bottom edges of legs
